NORDAM has reached a strategic agreement with Boeing that will allow the Tulsa-based aerospace company to manufacture spare F/A‐18 A‐D Hornet leading‐edge flaps, NORDAM CEO Meredith Siegfried Madden announced Thursday.
The flaps alter the aerodynamic profile of the fighter aircraft’s wing leading edge for increased or decreased lift, as well as for enhanced maneuverability, while in flight.
It is NORDAM's first F/A‐18 manufacturing program as a spares supplier to Boeing in support of the U.S. Navy, marking NORDAM’s entry into this competitive market while complementing the company’s current U.S. Navy repair and overhaul service work. The contract runs through 2022.
"As a global leader in component manufacturing for commercial and business aircraft, NORDAM is well qualified to deliver the predictive performance this program requires,” Madden said in a statement.
"It is our privilege to help improve the fleet readiness and mission capability of this military aircraft and our U.S. Navy."
According to Naval Air Systems Command, the F/A-18 Hornet is used as an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. Depending on the model, the Hornets can have one or two seats and have been manufactured since 1978.
It is second significant announcement of the summer for NORDAM. In June, it said it had signed a long-term contract to supply Airbus with anchored honeycomb air-inlet panels for the Leap-1A engine used on the A320neo family of aircraft.
The agreement will generate several million dollars of annual revenue, with deliveries beginning early next year, according to a NORDAM news release.
