iPhone 8 Plus teardown reveals it costs around Rs 19000 to manufacture: Report

The iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone 8 are expensive phones, even to manufacture. In fact, the two phones are among the most expensive phones to make are definitely the most expensive iPhones to make so far. So how much they cost Apple? According to a tear-down and analysis done by IHS Markit, a market research firm, the iPhone 8 costs Apple $247.51 while the iPhone 8 Plus costs $288.08.

In other words, the iPhone 8 costs Apple around Rs 16,000 while the iPhone 8 Plus manufacturing cost is close to Rs 19,000. The important bit to note is that this is the component cost that Apple has to spend on the new iPhones, according to IHS Markit. The research firm told about its analysis to Bloomberg. Although it is worth remembering that the IHS Markit is not an official source on these matters.

Thisanalys is is done every year for popular high-end phones. So recently, Apple CEO TIM Cook was asked how accurate these were and her replied that he never saw "one that is anywhere close to being accurate."

But with that said, as far as the component cost is concerned, the IHS Markit must be somewhat right because the firm meticulously tracks supply chain for gadgets. Although, in its analysis it doesn't include the cost of labour, marketing and research.

Apple sells the iPhone 8 Plus at Rs 73,000 in India whereas the smaller iPhone 8 has a starting price of Rs 64,000. The pre-booking for the two phone, which went on sale in global markets from September 22, is on in India. Here the phones will go on sale from September 29. Apple also recently launched the iPhone X which will go on sale in India from November 3. That phone will have a starting price of Rs 89,000 and while IHS has not calculated its manufacturing cost it is almost certain that the iPhone X will probably cost Apple higher to manufacture.

The manufacturing cost of the iPhone X could be close to, or even higher than, the cost of the Samsung Galaxy S8. In an earlier analysis IHS had revealed that total manufacturing cost of the Galaxy S8 was $307.

Compared to the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 7, the manufacturing cost for the iPhones has gone up for Apple. "The added value went to memory, camera, and processing. That's where we can materially identify where they've improved the overall product, and hence why they can command a higher price for it," Wayne Lam, an analyst at IHS, told Bloomberg.
