Province trying to manufacture northern jobs

The Manitoba government will study if it can boost the province’s northern economy with new aerospace manufacturing jobs.

Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart said the province will partner with  Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) and Manitoba Aerospace to “lay the foundation” for a potential new manufacturing company to produce aerospace products in the region.

The province will pay $85,000 toward a business plan for the venture, while OCN will commit another $25,000.

“We are pleased to work together to create high-paying, highly skilled jobs and allow our province to maintain its global competitiveness in the aerospace industry,”  said Wishart, in a press release.

The provinces hopes to ensure a facility is operating within two years, if the plan works out. That would create a local supply of products for the aerospace industry that currently must be shipped in from elsewhere.
