It isn't your normal Juicy Fruit gum you'd find in a convenience store.
But, Katherine Bazemore, President of Volatile Analysis, told WAAY 31 her gum, which she isn't ready to show off yet, would do more than just put a nice taste in your mouth. It could detect the kind of cancer someone may have.
"We really believe this gum can be that vehicle," Bazemore said.
According to doctors our bodies produce volatile organic compounds, which are chemicals unique to each type of cancer.
Bazemore said the gum, once put in your mouth, can absorb those chemicals.
"And, then that gum can be tested and then read to see which disease you may have," Bazemore said.
According to the National Cancer Institution more than 1.6 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year. And scientists said the gum could help ease those numbers.
"Maybe it could actually get eradicated, and that's the ultimate goal," Bazemore said.
The company is working to have the gum available by next year.
