Franklin County jury recommends 35 years for conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) -- A Franklin County judge handed down a 35-year sentence to a man convicted of conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine in August 2016, according to a statement from A.J. Dudley, the Commonwealth's Attorney for Franklin County.

A jury convicted Robert Joseph Layman Tuesday and recommended the 35 year sentence.

According to Dudley, law enforcement received information that a person previously reported as 'missing' was possibly at a residence on Montgomery Farms Road in the Moneta area.

When deputies responded, Dudley said they located the 'missing' individual, along with Robert Layman and others.

Dudley said evidence associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine was found at the residence.

Layman admitted to officers that he had recently purchased Sudafed and provided it to others, Dudley said. Sudafed contains an ingredient that is commonly used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

“Mr. Layman claimed that he only provided the Sudafed in exchange for beer from the others who actually manufactured the dangerous narcotic, but the jury rejected that self-serving statement,” Dudley noted.

A formal sentencing for Layman is scheduled for March of 2018.
