Police: Speeder had hidden drugs

An Erie man stopped for speeding was found to have hidden drugs on him.

William John Hooten, 38, was charged by state police Sept. 5 with manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; intentional possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered under the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device or Cosmetic Act; possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use; driving with a suspended or revoked license; exceeding the speed limit by 22 miles per hour; and failure to use a child booster seat.

All charges were held to the Mercer County Court of Common Pleas during a preliminary hearing Dec. 27 with District Judge D. Neil McEwen, Pine Township. Hooten was returned to Mercer County Jail after failing to post bond, and his Common Pleas arraignment is 9 a.m. Feb. 27 with Judge Daniel F. Wallace.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police monitoring traffic for speed enforcement around 9:40 a.m. May 15 on Interstate 79 northbound in Jackson Township saw a vehicle going 92 miles per hour – the speed was measured on a handheld radar unit, and the speed limit was 70 miles per hour.

A traffic stop was initiated, and police detected the odor or marijuana when they approached the car.

The driver, Hooten, provided identification, and a search of his person revealed a small amount of marijuana concealed in his buttocks.

A second search at the police barracks yielded a plastic bag containing 21.67 grams of heroin, also concealed in his buttocks.
