The US EPA has found three new chemical substances "unlikely to pose an unreasonable risk", clearing the way for their manufacture.
The chemicals are:
- D-glucitol, 1-deoxy-1-(dimethylamino)-;
- alkyl alkenoic acid, alkyl ester, polymer with alkyl alkenoate, dialkyl alkanediol, substituted carbomonocycle, disubstituted heteromonocycle,disubstituted heteropolycyclic, alkanediol, substituted alkyl alkyl alkenoate and substituted heteromonocycle, dialkyl peroxide initiated; and
- isesquioxanes, 2,4,4-trimethylpentyl, hydroxy-terminated.
They are for use as additives, the first two substances for paints and coatings, the third for oils, lubricants and coatings.
Although the EPA found that all three substances would be persistent in the environment, they are unlikely to pose an unreasonable risk. This is due to "low potential for bioaccumulation, low human health hazard and low environmental hazard".
The determinations on pre-manufacture notices (PMNs) were finalised in December and published on the agency's website on 8 January.
