The Maharashtra government has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an Italian car manufacturer, which is set to manufacture electronic vehicles (EVs) in the state. The MoU was signed on Monday, the second day of the ‘Magnetic Maharashtra’ global investors’ summit in Mumbai. The firm has entered into a joint venture with Force India.
According to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was present when the MoU was signed, the automobile company, Tonino Lamborghini Group, will set up a plant at Supe in Pune to manufacture the eco-friendly vehicles. This Italian firm is a different entity from the well-known luxury car manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini Group. “The group appreciated the state government’s EV policy, which is the reason for this positive response,” said state industries minister Subhash Desai.
The Maharashtra government recently announced a detailed EV policy that aims at giving the manufacturers and buyers a slew of incentives. The policy stresses on the use of EVs as mode of mass transport and as such, aims to attract an investment of Rs25,000 crore and create 1 lakh jobs in the next five years.
