Introducing the Slim d'Hermès Manufacture

A distinctive typeface that tracks time with singular elegance, an ultra-slim case as classic as they come, and an in-house movement to keep everything ticking with metronomic precision. More than enough for the Slim d’Hermès Manufacture to become the centre of attention. Because contrary to popular belief, under the cuff need not mean under the radar. A slim watch is one we both notice and admire. In the right hands it becomes outrageously beautiful, a lesson in harmony. Its apparent simplicity intrigues. And yet…

Clarity above all

Debuted in 2015 with multiple executions since, there is nothing simple about the Slim d’Hermès Manufacture. Far from it. Its design is a carefully measured blend of rigour and austerity, rounded out by a design that tends towards originality. Something different. “The collection was born from encounters between the Maison, designers and artisans. The singular blend of contemporary and classic elegance embodied in Slim d’Hermès expresses the essence of Hermès,” remarks Philippe Delhotal, Creative Director for La Montre Hermès. So as to give the face of the watch a unique personality, the brand called on the talent of graphic designer Philippe Apeloig, who imagined a custom font for the dial. “I built it around fundamentals, just as a composer places only seven notes on a musical stave to create a symphony,” he explains. “I’m inspired by the human body in motion, and I explore volumes and rhythm through recurrent and overlapping motifs.” The magnificently sparse numerals underscore the contours of the dial, which is built on three levels: an hour circle surrounding a central disc with subsidiary seconds set in it.

A quintessential movement

Beyond what is clearly a desire for a clean, uncluttered aesthetic, the Slim d’Hermès Manufacture demonstrates that the mechanics of watchmaking are also part of its skills set. An ultra-thin case necessarily implies an ultra-thin movement and, ticking away behind the scenes, the Slim can rely on the H1950 calibre, made by Vaucher Manufacture for Hermès. Hours, minutes and small seconds are precisely indicated by a calibre that barely exceeds 2.6mm in height and is automatically wound by a micro-rotor. Turning the case over reveals a wide opening fitted with a sapphire crystal to allow us to bask in the glorious movement finishing; in particular the hand-chamfering and the bold “semis de H” or “sprinkling of Hs” pattern. Here too, rigour and sobriety are the key to elegance. Two characteristics which define a watch whose every detail tells of an encounter between graphic design and horological dexterity.
