Vijaya Rahatkar, the chairperson of the state women commission has taken up this initiative. She was in the city on Sunday when she paid a visit to the prison for the inauguration of sanitary pad dispensing as well as thrash machine.
She told TOI, “When I payed them a visit and interacted with them it came to my mind that manufacturing sanitary pads could be a source of income for the inmates as well as the jail administration and so I decided to arrange a manufacturing machine for them.”
Rahatkar informed that soon after getting clearance from the prison authorities, the machine would be installed and an NGO would train them in the manufacturing process which will also help these women once they are out of prison.
The jail authorities maintained that if things go as per the plan, then the prison administration will start catering to the government as well as the private hospitals before entering the market.
An official of the central prison said, “The prison has a number of vocational activities for male prisoners but there was no steady activity to engage the female inmates.”
With the changing times the prison authorities are trying to explore the open markets to give necessary exposure to the products manufactured by the inmates and boost the revenue generated out of these products.
At present, the inmates who have been deployed with carpentry, power loom, tailoring and other workshops at the prison manufacture scores of products including steel and wooden furniture, handloom and textile products, recycled handmade paper products, paintings, woven cots, jute bags and khadi products to name a few.
