Ramaphosa: African Union wants SA to manufacture trains for the continent

Government is working to address the spatial development left by the apartheid government and Ramaphosa has called for stakeholders, including opposition parties, to bring forward ideas as it develops an integrated transport system.

Ramaphosa was answering questions in Parliament on Tuesday, DA leader Mmusi Maimane asked if government would shift budget allocated for national roads to metros instead in order to improve transport systems.

Ramaphosa said he welcomed Maimane's proposal. "It is a matter that all of us need to put our heads around and deal with spatial landscape of our country, how our people have been accommodated over many years of apartheid misrule and the impact it has had in moving people around should be looked at in a broader way," he said.

Ramaphosa said government was attending to the burning of trains and secondly getting the efficiency of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa right.

The president added that there is a factory in SA which manufactures trains, the manufacturing of trains will play a role in developing the integrated transport system.

"The AU (African Union)  has declared that SA should be the country which manufactures trains for the rest of Africa, giving great faith in our transport system, in the way we calibrate it."
