New Delhi: Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) reportedly told a Delhi court that Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the AgustaWestland case had named Sonia Gandhi during a probe, Congress leader and former Defence Minister AK Antony said that the Gandhi family 'never interfered' in the defence deal.
"Government, BJP misusing agencies to manufacture lies. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi never interfered in defence deal. As a former Defence Minister, I would like to say categorically that Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi showed any interest or never interfered in the Agusta Westland deal," Antony told reporters here. Earlier, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram had said that "Even kangaroo courts hold trials in a courtroom. Our new 'improved' system will surpass kangaroo courts and deliver justice on TV channels".
The Congress and the BJP had engaged in a slugfest and the Congress alleged that the ruling party and PM Narendra Modi were the promoters of AgustaWestland. The BJP, on the other hand, asked why Congress was defending Michel and asked why it was scared of a probe into the matter.
"After Christian named some ‘Mrs Gandhi’, ‘the son of the Italian lady’, the Congress party is scrambling to protect the ‘family’ by resorting to LIES. Here are FACTS: UPA did not blacklist AgustaWestland, Modi govt did and never withdrew the blacklisting," said Amit Malviya, BJP's national Information & Technology head. Michel was extradited from Dubai in an operation administered by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. It is alleged that he facilitated kickbacks to decision makers in India to swing the deal for 12 VVIP choppers in favour of AgustaWestland.
