Vizag, major hub for medical devices manufacture: AP CM - Telangana Today

Visakhapatnam: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has said that Visakhapatnam would become a major hub for manufacture of medical devices in the country and cater to the needs of the domestic and export markets.

Addressing the inaugural session of the fourth WHO global forum on medical devices after dedicating the Andhra Pradesh Mdtech Zone to the nation here on Thursday, he noted that 80 per cent to 90 per cent of the medical devices in the country were being imported and now most of them could be manufactured at AP Medtech Zone, with exports also be done later. The zone would give a fillip to the medical devices sector in the healthcare industry, he felt.

He also said that for the first time, the WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices was being held in the country andthanked the WHO representative Henk Bekedam, for choosing Visakhapatnam and AP Medteh Zone for the meet.

Union Minister of State for Health, Ashwini Kumr Chowbey, congratualted the AP Government for achievement and said the Central Government had also a role in establishing two incubation centres in the zone.

CEO and MD of AP Medtech Jitender Sharma, said that the first phase of the park was completed in just over a year’s time. India was importing medical devices worth Rs.30,000 crore every year and the park would play a big role in import substitution, he pointed out. There were 18 high-end industrial labs in the park and 80 units including 17 startups were already functioning, he revealed.
