DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan 15, 2019--The “Manufacture of General Purpose Machinery in South Africa 2018” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.
Manufacture of General Purpose Machinery examines a wide range of manufacturing sectors, from weighing and refrigeration to packaging and generators. This report provides comprehensive profiles of 71 companies and includes information on the state and size of the industry, factors influencing its success and corporate actions in the sector.
Company profiles include those of original equipment manufacturers such as Actom and Defy and manufacturers operating as the local divisions of international manufacturers such as Carl Zeiss, Donaldson Filtration, and GEA Africa. Among the companies profiled is Whirlpool South Africa, which has invested R100m in a manufacturing plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
Sales of general purpose machinery totalled some R38bn in 2017, growing 5.6% from R36.2bn in 2016. The sector continues to be constrained by South Africa’s poor economy, insufficient demand from key customer markets and declining manufacturing competitiveness relative to major exporting nations such as China.
The metals and machinery sector employs approximately 295,000 people and is a major contributor to South Africa’s wider manufacturing industry.
The long-term decline in production has stabilised since 2016, although volumes have remained relatively flat. Manufacturing capacity utilisation in the metals and engineering sector stood at 76.9% in Q1 2018, falling from 78.2% in Q1 2017, with the majority of this decline attributed to insufficient demand.
The general purpose machinery segment is forecast to grow by just 0.6% in 2018. Government remains committed to industrialisation as a key element of the country’s economic stimulus, and the latest medium-term expenditure framework allocates R18.8bn for industrialisation and manufacturing incentives over the next three years.
