Foxconn Technology Group said today it is moving forward with plans to manufacture LCD screens at a facility in southeastern Wisconsin following talks between the Taiwanese tech company and President Trump.
The company today said it is planning to construct what’s called a Generation 6 facility following “productive conversations” between Foxconn and the Trump administration. That includes a personal conversation between Chairman Terry Gou and President Trump.
Along with an advanced manufacturing facility, the company said it planned to use the Racine County plant as a “hub of high technology innovation for the region.”
Foxconn had originally planned to build a larger Generation 10.5 facility for LCD panels but last summer backed away from the plan and opted for the Generation 6 factory, which would produce smaller screens. The company at the time left open the possibility for a Generation 10.5 facility, but said the final decision would depend on market and economic conditions.
Today’s announcement comes after a week dominated by news surrounding the company’s plans for its Racine County site. The latest came yesterday, when a Japan-based outlet reported Foxconn was suspending and scaling back its Wisconsin plant following negotiations with Gov. Tony Evers, a report Evers, Foxconn Technology Group and the state jobs agency refuted.
Foxconn Technology Group this afternoon said its decision for a Generation 6 facility is based on “a recent comprehensive and systematic evaluation” to identify the thin-film transistor screens best suited for the Wisconsin project.
“We have undertaken the evaluation while simultaneously seeking to broaden our investment across Wisconsin far beyond our original plans to ensure the company, our workforce, the local community, and the state of Wisconsin will be positioned for long-term success,” the statement said.
The statement didn’t include a timeline for construction or an estimate of how many would be employed at the facility.
