It was a wild night of racing in round three of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, January 18, where the young season saw its third different winner (and motorcycle brands) in as many rounds. And we also have a new red-plate holder.
It took a few rounds, but the real Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) stood up and showed what everyone knows what he’s capable of doing, and that’s winning. Tomac was fast all day on the tight and extremely technical track. He qualified second earlier in the day, won his heat race and ran off with the win in the main event.
However, at first it appeared it was going to be another disappointing night for the Kawasaki rider. He got off to a 10th-place start while last week’s winner Ken Roczen jumped out to an early lead and quickly opened up a small gap on the field. Tomac, however, immediately started moving forward and made one pass after another until he fought his way into second place. He then started chewing into Roczen’s lead and eventually reeled in the Honda rider. Tomac was just too strong for Roczen on this night, and Tomac rode past last week’s winner and ran off with the victory, his first since Las Vegas last year. Tomac took the checkered just 1.9 seconds ahead of Roczen, but Tomac slowed on the last lap after maintaining about a five-second lead on the Honda rider for much of the race.
While Tomac and Roczen led the way, there was tons of action going on behind them, especially a lot of passing and often time re-passing. After all was said and done, defending champ Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) held on to take third, well ahead of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Team riders Zach Osborne and Jason Anderson, who earlier in the race looked to have a shot at getting on the podium.
Top qualifier Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) didn’t get the start he was hoping for and spent the entire race battling for positions, finally crossing the finish line in sixth.
Justin Brayton (Honda HRC) and Malcolm Stewart (Smartop/Bullfrog Spas/Motoconcepts Honda) went 7-8, while Anaheim 1 winner Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) took ninth after struggling with the track all day and night. Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) rounded out the top 10.
Roczen is the new red-plate holder, which signifies the class championship leader. It was formerly held by Barcia, who slips back to second, three points behind Roczen.
With his big win, Tomac is now third in the championship, just five points out of first place.
The wild 250SX West main event featured a little bit of everything, but this one will be remembered most for the one that got away. Sixteen-year-old Australian Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda), who was an amateur just last year, looked to be headed to a sure victory when things started unravelling for him late in the race. A small mistake while enjoying a comfortable lead allowed Anaheim 1 250SX winner Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy/Star Yamaha Racing) to catch up and start pressuring him for the win. It was an all-out duel between the two riders on the last lap. Ferrandis made a big push and got around the rookie, who wasn’t about to give up. With the checkered flag in sight, Lawrence blitzed the whoops in hopes of getting back by Ferrandis but got kicked and rode the front wheel until hitting the face of the next jump. The impact with the ground broke his collarbone, and he had to be helped off the track and never got the chance to see the checkered flag, but he was credited with ninth place.
Ferrandis’ win appeared in jeopardy after a questionable pass he made earlier in the race on runner-up Christian Craig that sent the Geico Honda rider to the ground—hard. Craig was unable to finish, his bike too damaged to continue. The AMA reviewed the pass and issued a $3000 fine to Ferrandis, along with 12 months of probation, but the results from the night of racing stand as they are.
Second went to Ferrandis’ teammate and points leader Justin Cooper, with Brandon Hartranft (Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM) taking third for the second week in a row.
Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), who qualified via the LCQ, took fourth and Alex Martin (JGR/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing) fifth.
Championship hopeful Austin Forkner (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki) was looking good for a top finish when he suffered a hard crash in the whoops. He was shaken up in the fall and eventually finished 17th.

Daytime Qualifying
The 2020 Anaheim 2 Supercross is up and running, and it’s been a back-and-forth battle all afternoon long between Monster Energy Kawasaki teammates Eli Tomac and Adam Cianciarulo as to who will top the 450SX leaderboard in qualifying. For quite a while, it looked as though Tomac would come out on top, but Cianciarulo waited to the very end of Q2 to bust out the quickest lap time of the day, edging out Tomac for that honor. Cianciarulo’s 51.865 nipped Tomac’s 51.934, but the bottom line is that both of the factory Kawasaki riders are riding well and have the Anaheim track, which Cianciarulo describes as tight and technic, dialed in.
The first non-Kawasaki rider is Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen who also looks fast but is just under three-10ths of a second off Tomac’s time.
A pair of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna riders, Dean Wilson and Jason Anderson complete the top five.
Defending champ Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb has upped his pace in qualification after posting the sixth-quickest time.
Close behind Webb chase Malcolm Stewart, Justin Hill, and Martin Davalos, who led the entire 450SX class after Q1.
Benny Bloss rounds out the top 10.
Points leader, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Justin Barcia is struggling to find his rhythm on the Anaheim track. His best time in Q2 was nearly two seconds off Cianciarulo’s pace and goes into the evening’s program as the 18th fastest qualifier.
Chad Reed qualified a distant 24th.
Dylan Ferrandis dominated 250SX West qualifying. His name has seemingly been at the top of the leaderboard all afternoon, and the Monster Energy Yamaha/Star Racing Yamaha rider finished out 250SX qualifying that way—on top. But there isn’t much room between him and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Austin Forkner. Just two-10ths separate the two championship rivals.
Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda), Justin Cooper (Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha), and Christian Craig (Geico Honda) are right there, as well. The top five riders are all within a second of each other.
Just outside that group in sixth is Brandon Hartranft (Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM), followed by Michael Mosiman, Alex Martin, and Jacob Hayes.
Anaheim fans are enjoying another perfect day for supercross racing. No need for a roof tonight.
As mentioned, the track is indeed tight and technical and features a long start straight, a couple of whoop sections and a short split lane that could allow for some passing later in the evening. CN
