It was a time of new beginnings in downtown Riverside on Saturday, Jan. 25: a new lunar year, a new cycle of the zodiac and a new festival to celebrate it.

Riverside Lunar Festival marked the beginning of the year of the rat, which is the first sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle.

The festival, which concludes Sunday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., was hosted by the company Panana after a previous lunar celebration ended when its organizer left the state.

Kung fu, lion dancers, visual artists and other performances are part of the free festival, staged on Mission Inn Avenue, between Lime and Orange streets.
