Kobe Bryant's death dominated the news cycle, outpaced impeachment and coronavirus - The Hill

The news cycle is restless, but the first month of 2020 was teeming with stories that all could have broken the internet.

Now, data is showing exactly which stories dominated social media at the start of the new year.

The tragic passing of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, as well as eight others, outpaced interactions about the U.S. impeachment, the Super Bowl, the Iowa caucuses, the coronavirus outbreak, and the Grammys combined, according to data from NewsWhip provided exclusively to Axios news.

The data represented the period from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2 and depict traffic related to Kobe Bryant as having approximately 208.4 million interactions on Twitter. This sweeps comparably urgent stories such as the coronavirus outbreak, which boasted 66.1 million interactions; the U.S. impeachment, which 59.3 million interactions; the Super Bowl with 50.5 million interactions; the Grammys, with 12 million; and last, the Iowa Caucuses, with 4.2 million interactions.

The unit of measurement here, ‘interactions,' is a term for people engaging with the topic, whether in tweets, retweets, likes or views. Posts related to Kobe saw 208.4 million interactions, while all the other aforementioned topics saw a combined 192.1 million interactions.

Axios notes in its conclusion that, “In a news ecosystem that's fragmented by both niche interests and ideology, it's rare for the internet to be so captivated by a single story.”

There have been and will likely be a bevy of analyses as to why the public was so profoundly impacted by Kobe’s death. Some argue that his daughter dying by his side compounded the grief.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Derek Silva, a sociologist at King’s University College at Western University in Ontario, Canada, said that, “Our outcry of support for Kobe has a lot more to do with us trying to cope with the fragility of life and the connection of ourselves to the society in which we identify.”

Silva continued to say that this fragility stems from Kobe’s perception as “invincible” both on and off the court. His death was seen as untimely and personal, making the rest of the world feel particularly mortal.
