ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Family Peace Center is working to help kids in the Rockford are by accepting a grant focused on childhood trauma.
The grant, called the Illinois Heals Grant Award, will allow the center to hire three employees focused on this issue.
The grant cost more than $160,000.
"Domestic violence is completely preventable. If we don't turn to our youth to try to prevent the future generations of not only abusers or potential victims, we will never work ourselves out of a job," said Jennifer Cacciapaglia from the Mayor's Office on Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Prevention.
The staff that will be hired from this grant will include a therapist to help these children cope with trauma and an project manger that will connect the center to other partners that can benefit these children and young adults.
Cacciapaglia says different forms of trauma can be created from sexual assault and domestic violence situations.
She says with the help of these employees, children can get the help they need to heal.
"it's an all hands on deck situation. We need people to understand that there is an entire continuum to the creation and existence of sustainability of these crimes. And that means the people who are coming into contact with infants, to preschoolers, to third graders, to middle schoolers, to high school, college level, every single person who I have named in those categories plays a role in helping respond and prevent these crimes," said Cacciapaglia
Cacciapaglia Says this is the first of three grants connected to this issue that the are accepting. They will accept the other two in the near future.
