Start the Cycle youth biking program now accepting applications - UpperMichigansSource.com

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A program that helps at-risk youth get into the sport of Mountain Biking is now accepting applicants.

Start the Cycle welcomes new bikers, ages 12-17, to the organization each year. The group meets every Thursday during summer months, practicing biking techniques with one on one mentors.

The goal for each participant in the program is to finish the Ore to Shore bike race in August.

“I think it’s really important because it gives kids a chance to belong to something. Not everyone’s going to be a football player, not everyone is going to be a cheerleader, but it’s really easy to learn how to ride a mountain bike. We don’t train racers, some kids will race, but most of them are out there just to be part of something,” by Laura MacDonald, Executive Director of Start the Cycle.

Applications for Start the Cycle are due March 17, with interviews taking place March 19 and 26. The group will begin indoor training on April 9 at Negaunee Township Hall.

The application form can be found by clicking here.
