Classical café to feature Schubert’s song cycle - The Ellsworth American

WINTER HARBOR — Pianist Deiran Manning and baritone Henry Horstmann will perform Franz Schubert’s song cycle “Die Winterreise” (“The Winter’s Journey”) at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, at Hammond Hall.

“The Winter’s Journey” spans the emotional spectrum as it catalogs the journey of an artist who has lost his love. New York Times writer James Oestreich describes the work as “a spurned lover’s wanderings in aimless despair through a wintry clime.”

As part of the Winter Harbor Music Festival’s First Friday Classical Café, the New York-based musicians will perform Schubert’s great cycle of lieder, written for an intimate gathering of friends.

A Long Island native, Horstmann has performed with the Crane Opera Ensemble, Bronx Opera, New York Lyric Opera Theatre and the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island. He has performed baritone roles such as Papageno in “Die Zauberflöte” and Koko in “The Mikado.”

Manning, who divides his time between New York and Gouldsboro, has performed across the United States as well as in Ireland, England, France and Italy. He is currently on the faculty at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.

Tickets are available at winterharbormusicfestival.com. For more info, contact Deiran Manning at [email protected] or (917) 238-0819.
