Temporary Liffey cycle route may be in place by August - RTE.ie

A temporary Liffey cycle route has been approved by Dublin City Councillors and could now be in place by August.

The facility will involve the use of plastic bollards known as Orcas to provide a segregated cycle-way along most of the quays.

However along some sections, particularly on the South Quays from O'Connell Bridge to the Civic Offices, there is no room.

Assistant Chief Executive Brendan O'Brien said on these sections existing bus and cycle lanes will be made 24/7.

A special meeting to discuss details of the plan will be held later this month after chair of the Transport Committee Christy Burke (Independent) said there were concerns about the plan from disability groups, motorists and pedestrians.

However it was approved by the meeting with Green Party Councillor Janet Honer saying it was overwhelmingly positive that there would now be a delay of months rather than years or decades.
