Short sellers are used to putting others under the spotlight. This week, one became the center of some comic attention himself.

Andrew Left, whose investment fund Citron Capital returned 43.3% after fees in 2019, has been a prominent critic of Peloton Interactive, whose branded exercise bikes allow users to tune in to virtual classes from home.

On Monday, a social-media-savvy investor who uses the Twitter pseudonym @TypicalVC tweeted a video of actress Monica Ruiz, the star of a widely mocked 2019 Peloton advert, tearing into Mr. Left.

“Listen. One bad little bit of promotional materials or, you know, press, isn’t going to kill a company like Peloton,” said Ms. Ruiz. “I mean, come on. Do you know how many people I know had a bike delivered to them this week? I mean come on. Ye of little faith.”

Ms. Ruiz is registered with Cameo, a site that provides personalized videos from celebrities.

On March 13, Citron Research suggested Peloton stock would fall by 80% in the next 12 months. As of Monday’s close, it was up by more than 40% since the piece was published, amid widespread coronavirus lockdowns.

The tweeter of the video confirmed that it was made in jest, rather than out of spite, and that he had paid $59.99 for the clip.

“I believe Andrew Left is a phenomenal analyst, particularly when it comes to exposing frauds,” he added.
