86-year-old hopes to cycle her way to £2000 for Furness General Hospital - NW Evening Mail

A BLIND 86-year-old woman who has had two hip replacements has committed to cycle for 21 hours to raise money for Furness General Hospital workers.

Joan Milburn, from Walney, will finish her seven day sponsored cycle today after vowing to do three hours a day on her bike at home.

The cancer survivor is dedicating this charitable effort to her late sister who sadly passed away last month.

Irene Crabtree was often seen alongside Joan as they raised money for various charities, including guide dog charities.

The idea was pitched to Joan by her grandson James Burns, who saw this as an opportunity to keep her active and occupied during the lockdown period, as she is having to stay indoors 24/7.

“She has been using her bike for years now,” he said.

“The plan was to do seven days and three hours each day. The original target was 250km but she has smashed that.

“The benefit of this is that she is not carrying her own bodyweight, she is just pedalling.

“I suggested it knowing that she would want to do it really.

“She was very keen to get involved in this when I suggested it.

“She is loving all the attention for this to be honest.

“She has raised hundred of thousands of pounds over the years for charity.

“This time it is for the Furness General Hospital workers, we just need to organise with them which department it will go to.

“The original target was £500 but now we are hoping to get more than £2000.”

Donations to the fundraiser page are welcome, and the details can be found at https://ift.tt/2y5iASi
