The business has been offering outdoor classes in the studio's parking lot every Saturday morning—with one person standing in one parking space so as to maintain distance—and moved to an online subscription model, called overFLO, where customers can access dozens of prerecorded videos for about $40 a month.
"We always planned on building out an online presence but not under these circumstances," Davis said. "It's pushed us a lot. If we didn’t have that option this would be so demoralizing and defeating. The fact that we are still able to reach people is something."
Gov. Doug Ducey ordered the closure of all gyms in March, and while some guidance has been provided on reopening retail and restaurants, no guidance has been provided to gyms. Davis said when it comes to reopening, the gyms and studios are going to face an uphill battle.
"Our industry has been completely overlooked," Davis said. "I should be able to earn an income and run my business and offer something that every single person needs right now. Paying attention to our physical health has never been more important. I think the helplessness of it all is what people don’t appreciate right now. There is very little compassion for people who say, 'I want to open my business.' I don’t judge you; I’m not saying you have to leave your house or do something you're not comfortable with. I have had no control in the situation and no choice at all."
Davis said the studio froze all of its memberships from the beginning of the shutdown; she said it was the right thing to do, but it also means no revenue for the business. FLO Yoga & Cycle also made 15 bikes available to rent out to members.
"This was another way to keep members healthy and engaged," Davis said.
The members have been what is keeping Davis going, she said.
"It's nice to have support from the community," Davis said. "I feel like that's really what's kept us going emotionally. We've invested so much into this business—so much physical and emotional and mental effort that goes into running a small business—and that's what stings, is that it's all been so devalued all the sudden."
