LG Display is preparing to order Specialized Equipment for the manufacture of LPTO displays for future iPhones - Patently Apple

Samsung has once again beat the competition for Apple's iPhone display business by delivering LPTO displays that supports refresh rates of 120Hz at lower power consumption. In early June we reported that Apple's minor display supplier BOE is set to begin producing LPTO displays for iPhones for 2022 or 2023. Theoretically BOE's plan was to  become Apple's second tier display supplier by challenging LG. We're now hearing about LG's plans for manufacturing LPTO displays for Apple. This morning Patently Apple discovered a report from The Elec wherein it notes that LG is in talks with display equipment manufacturer for "sputters" to make LTPO OLED displays.

The report specifically states that Korean "Display equipment maker Avaco has begun talks with LG Display over the specifications of the sputters that will be used to manufacture low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED production.

LG Display will likely give the order from the equipment once its customer Apple approves its OLED production line.

Sputtering is a form of vacuum deposition method. Ionized argon gas is accelerated and clashed with the target. The target falls to the glass to form a thin film. The target is coated on the panel thinly, which makes it transparent and conductive.

LG Display is planning to convert its line to LTPO TFT OLED in the hopes that it will supply them to Apple next year.

LG will have to adjust the new equipment from Avaco according to Apple’s specification demands. For more on this, read the full report by The Elec.
