Moderna to build mRNA facility in Africa, will manufacture millions of vaccine doses - Boston Herald

Moderna is continuing to expand the company with its latest announcement to build a state-of-the-art mRNA facility in Africa, which will manufacture up to 500 million vaccine doses per year.

The estimated $500 million facility will include drug manufacturing and capacity for finish, fill and packaging of vaccines. The country and site in Africa has not yet been selected.

The new facility is expected to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines and other mRNA products. Moderna’s pipeline includes 20 vaccine candidates for various medical conditions including cancer and HIV.

“We are determined to extend Moderna’s societal impact through the investment in a state-of-the-art mRNA manufacturing facility in Africa. While we are still working to increase capacity in our current network to deliver vaccines for the ongoing pandemic in 2022, we believe it is important to invest in the future,” Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a statement.

The news comes on the heels of another expansion announcement. Moderna will also be building a new science center on Binney Street in Cambridge, about a half mile from its headquarters in Technology Square.

The science center will have custom spaces for research and development, and construction has already begun with move-in planned for next year. The new center is aimed at fueling Moderna’s “next chapter of discovery” according to the company.

Moderna stock has skyrocketed since the pandemic began, but ticked down slightly in recent weeks, standing at about $315 per share.
