Lincoln County commissioners are taking the next steps to consider the county's first medical marijuana license.

At Tuesday's meeting, the commission approved the first public hearing for an application submitted by Culture Shock LLC for a license to manufacture and grow marijuana.

The hearing is set for about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 23 in the County Commissioners' Meeting Room at the Lincoln County Courthouse. An outline of the proposal and review of the application will be presented at the hearing.

"We're a rarity in the state," commissioner Jim Schmidt said. "Most counties have only licensed dispensaries. Lincoln County's ordinance is licensing, growing, manufacturing and dispensing."

After the first hearing, the second hearing will be an opportunity for proponents and opponents to provide comment. The vote on the marijuana application will be made after the second hearing.

Although the commission has moved forward with reviewing the application, Schmidt believes it's the state's responsibility to license, grow and manufacture weed.

"I can see dispensing, but I just don't agree with the other two," he said.
