Manufacturing is strong in Ohio, offers good paying jobs - Akron Beacon Journal

Semiconductors. Electric vehicles and EV batteries. Jobs being reshored. Record-high output.

These are exciting times for Ohio’s manufacturing sector.

With companies like Intel, Sherwin-Williams, Amgen, Whirlpool, General Motors, Ford and many others — including small and mid-sized businesses — making substantial investments in our state, Ohio is writing the next chapter of its already storied manufacturing legacy.

In addition, the Buckeye State is leading by example on how to grow the manufacturing workforce, which is vital to retaining our status as a manufacturing powerhouse.

A recent survey by Schneider Downs found 84% of responding Ohio manufacturers said attracting and retaining a quality workforce was their top challenge. Even in a manufacturing state like ours, many residents remain unaware that modern manufacturing careers are high-tech, safe, well paying and intellectually engaging.

To bring more awareness, Oct. 7 is Manufacturing Day — and October is Manufacturing Month. Events will be held statewide to showcase opportunities in Ohio’s top industry.

This seems like the perfect opportunity to share the top reasons why young people and career switchers should strongly consider manufacturing. Here are my top 10:

More opportunity: With roughly 680,000 manufacturing jobs statewide, well-paying and career-building opportunities are right here in Ohio. There’s no reason to search elsewhere.

Debt-free careers: In 2020 (the most recent year available), Ohio manufacturing employees earned an average of $65,000. Some subsectors paid more than $100,000 on average. With so much attention given to student loan debt, younger Ohioans need to know that manufacturing careers can help them avoid debt in the first place, offering salaries far above the average.

Outstanding benefits: Manufacturing has one of the highest percentages of workers who are eligible for employer-provided health benefits. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 95% of manufacturing employees were eligible for health insurance benefits as of 2020.

Career growth: With few barriers to entry — and Ohio’s upskilling initiatives, like TechCred — there are numerous opportunities for growth, promotions and advancement in every area of manufacturing, including IT, finance, marketing, operations and more.

Ohio's No. 1 industry: Of Ohio’s 20 major economic sectors, manufacturing is the largest — providing an annual payroll of $42 billion. As of Q1 2022, Ohio’s annual manufacturing GDP was nearly $128 billion. And only California and Texas have more manufacturing employees.

Tomorrow's technology today: From 3-D printing to machining to next-gen robotics, today’s manufacturers are pushing the envelope of what is possible and building the future before our eyes. From the standpoint of innovation and emerging technology, there isn’t a more exciting industry.

An economic powerhouse: Manufacturing is the lifeblood of our local, state and national economies. By itself, America’s manufacturing sector would be the eighth-largest economy in the world — and Ohio is a major driver as one of the largest manufacturing states.

Producing for the world: Ohio supplies the planet with the goods it needs and wants. Ohio exports approximately $50 billion in goods to more than 200 countries and territories.

Prioritizing a healthier planet: Manufacturers are leaders in sustainable energy development. Federal data show that U.S. manufacturers’ gross output has expanded by 12% since 1998, while fuel consumption has decreased by 16%. In Ohio, manufacturers lead in the reduction, reuse and recycling of generated waste.

Many employers to choose from: Ohio has more than 13,750 manufacturing businesses statewide — and all of Ohio’s 88 counties offer rewarding career opportunities in manufacturing.

Ohioans who want to explore manufacturing careers for themselves — or family members — should first visit MakingOhio.com. Then visit with manufacturers in your community, especially those opening their doors during Manufacturing Month.

There has never been a more exciting time to learn more about Ohio manufacturing.

Ryan Augsburger is president of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, which represents approximately 1,500 manufacturers statewide.
