Sports columnists are calling auto racing the fastest growing sport in the U.S. amid the announcement that Formula 1 will race on the infamous Las Vegas Strip next year. With a love for racing comes a love for speed, and Kooks Headers & Exhaust’s commitment to the racing industry reflects in its speedy lead-time.

Kooks was founded in 1962 when George “Papa Kook” Kryssing used a gas torch to fashion headers for his family’s racecar. Today, the family-owned company has a passion for delivering high-quality headers, exhaust components, accessories, and various other parts for road racing, circle track racing, and drag racing to the racing industry.

“With the latest technology and materials available, our goal is to manufacture the highest quality performing products in our industry,” says George Kook Jr., CEO and president at Kooks. “We don’t simply deliver a bunch of tubes welded together or mufflers with an exhaust and shiny tip. We deliver a designed, engineered, and manufactured component.”

In addition to racing industry products, Kooks also offers military exhaust solutions, industrial exhaust solutions, and a range of manufacturing capabilities including MIG and TIG welding, CAD design work, CNC mandrel bending, and more.

The company’s engineering department, Kooks Industries, offers a host of services from product development and prototype testing to production. These capabilities allow them to deliver custom products beyond the racing industry.

Thomas Insights (TI): What sets Kooks apart from the competition?

George Kook Jr. (GK): Since our inception, Kooks has had a primary focus on the racing world, offering quality solutions for road racing, drag racing, motorcycles, and more. We’ve worked with some of the most well-known racing institutions in the country and have helped set records and win races.

Now that we are a full-fledged manufacturing facility with extensive capabilities, our great customer service is what sets us apart from the rest. We pride ourselves on being innovators in our industry. We design, test, and manufacture new products first, and other companies follow.

Although we’ve been serving the racing industry since 1962, our engineering service department, Kooks Industries, has offered customers component solutions, engineering expertise, and guidance through the product development process since 2012. We have become more than just a header and exhaust company. Using our mandrel tube benders, flat and tube lasers, and welders, we can make parts for industries beyond the automotive field to deliver solutions customers need.

TI: How has Kooks supported industry leaders?

GK: Kooks has provided headers and exhaust systems for many racing drivers, several of which have gone on to win championships. Our products are compatible with a variety of leading auto manufacturers, including Mustang, Chrysler, Chevrolet Corvette, and GM. When equipped with our headers, these vehicles can achieve higher speeds and performance.

Recently, Kooks Industries also worked with a customer who was looking for a very unique product. In just a short period of time, our expert team of engineers was able to design and create a working prototype that is now being tested.

TI: What’s the most common question you get from customers?

GK: Customers often ask, “Can you take my part and mass produce it?” and “Can you redesign my part to make it more production friendly?” The answer to both of these questions is yes.

We work with customers to produce a design that matches their specific needs. From design to production, and all processes that happen in between, Kooks Industries has the tools and expertise to take a customer’s idea and create a market-ready product.

TI: Can you dive into how Kooks' reverse engineering capabilities benefit customers?

GK: Our reverse engineering capabilities are unique to Kooks. We’re able to reverse engineer a customer’s part to fit our tooling as well as design fixturing to build the actual part.

We can also light scan a part to get it into CAD and create a model of exactly what a customer wants. From there, we can fine-tune the design to make it stronger, lighter, and more cost-effective.

TI: How is Kooks staying ahead of industry trends?

GK: In terms of performance, we are always looking to stay ahead in the industry by providing what the industry is lacking. With the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, many companies have been struggling to find optimal manufacturing solutions in the U.S. Kooks produces all of its parts in the U.S., so we are always able to serve businesses looking for domestic suppliers.
