Pompano Beach – In a nondescript warehouse here, the flying car, long just the stuff of science fiction, may have finally been born.

One of several companies across the world building flying cars, Doroni Aerospace invited Mayor Rex Hardin and the media to tour its facility on Dec. 7 and view its prototype, the H1 eVTOL, which, the company said, HAS received Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to an email from an FAA spokesperson, the H1 was issued the certificate on Nov. 16, which allows the aircraft to be used for limited purposes, including exhibition, research, and development.

“This is a game changer in terms of time and space,” said Doron Merdinger, Doroni’s CEO and founder.

The company envisions a future where its vehicles and other flying cars are commonplace, used for travel and running daily errands. Built using carbon fiber, the H1, about the width of two cars, is lifted skyward by propellers, much like a drone, and, the company says, has built-in safety and redundancy features, including a camera that allows the occupants to see beneath them as they’re traveling or landing. If something happens to the vehicle or the battery gets to 20 percent, it’s programmed to land automatically. The craft will also be governed by geofencing, pre-programed software that prevents it from being flown into dangerous areas, such as airports, or over sensitive government buildings.

Abe Dats, head of marketing and investor relations, said it’s a lot like a personal helicopter, but cheaper, quieter, and safer.

Dats said 400 H1’s have been pre-ordered, with manufacturing of the first units expected to happen in 2025, and mass production planned for 2026. The H1’s range is 60 miles and will cost between $300,000 and $350,000. The company, which has investors and is looking for more, also envisions its flying cars used one day by police, EMS, the military, even maintenance workers.

Hardin was impressed with the company and the prototype that Merdinger performed a short test flight in inside the warehouse earlier this year.

“You flew in here? That is pretty wild,” Hardin told Merdinger. Hardin asked if the craft could eventually be programmed so that flying from one destination to the other could be done automatically. Merdinger said that’s something that could eventually be added.

Said Hardin, “There are so many positives about this.”
