Fire reported at manufacturing building in Hanover Borough

STARTS RIGHT NOW. THIS IS COVERAGE. YOU CAN COUNT ON. WGAL NEWS EIGHT TODAY STARTS NOW. A MAN WAS SHOT IN HARRISBURG AFTER HE OPENED FIRE ON AN OFFICER. I’LL TELL YOU WHAT WE KNOW. PLUS, HIGH SCHOOL STAFF MEMBERS IN HARRISBURG NOW ON LEAVE AFTER GETTING INTO A FIGHT IN THE CLASSROOM. HEAR WHAT THE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT SAID ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. EXPANSIONS ARE UNDERWAY AT THE HARRISBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. I’LL TELL YOU HOW THAT CAN IMPACT THE CARGO INDUSTRY. AND WE START THIS HOUR WITH A LIVE LOOK OVER YORK. I ALWAYS LOVE SEEING YOUR COUNTY BECAUSE OF THE STEEPLE. IT’S BEAUTIFUL OUT THERE. GOOD MORNING EVERYONE. HOPEFULLY YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT THURSDAY. I’M REGINA REGINA AHN. I’M MATT BARCARO. IT’S ALWAYS EASIER TO GET OUT THE DOOR WHEN IT’S JUST NOT SO COLD. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN GET OUT THERE AND AND KNOW THAT TODAY IS GOING TO WARM UP EVEN MORE THAN YESTERDAY. CHRISTINE, WE COULD HIT 74 TODAY. WOW. 72 YESTERDAY. SO TODAY WILL BE THE WARMEST DAY OF THE WEEK BEFORE 60S RETURN WITH SOME SHOWERS TOMORROW. SO RIGHT NOW ON OUR STORM TEAM LIVE RADAR NETWORK, WE’RE JUST SEEING SOME CLUTTER ON THE RADAR AND SOME HIGH CLOUDS COMING IN FROM THE WEST. ON THE SATELLITE PICTURE TEMPERATURE CHECK. WE HAVE SOME UPPER 30S WHERE WINDS ARE CALM IN. THE SKY HAS BEEN CLEAR OVERNIGHT, BUT IN OTHER SPOTS WHERE THERE IS JUST A GENTLE BREEZE, YOU COULD FIND 40, EVEN 50, SO THAT WARMER AIR IS WAITING IN THE WINGS ONCE AGAIN AND WE WILL BE SEEING HIGHS ALMOST 25 DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE TODAY. I’M TONY, WE HAVE BEEN SO SPOILED LATELY I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT COLD IS ANYMORE, RIGHT? I KNOW IF IT DIPS BACK DOWN, WE’RE GOING TO FEEL IT. YEAH, TWICE AS MUCH NEXT WEEK WE HAVE SOME 40S FOR HIGHS. I’LL TALK ABOUT IT COMING UP. WE’LL JUST IGNORE IT NEXT WEEK. FOCUS ON TODAY. BE NICE AND WARM OUT THERE. ALL RIGHT. AND IF YOU ARE HEADING OUT THIS MORNING YOU SHOULD BE PRETTY GOOD. WE ARE TRACKING TWO CRASHES RIGHT NOW ON THE MAP. THE FIRST ONE THAT I WANT TO GET TO IS IN YORK COUNTY. NOW, WE HAVE SEEN THIS ON THE MAP FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW ON LEMMON ROAD AT STOVER’S TOWN ROAD. SO IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT IN THAT DIRECTION, JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND. THIS ONE IN DAUPHIN COUNTY, A ROAD IS CLOSED DUE TO A CRASH ON ROUTE 147 RIVER ROAD. BOTH WAYS RIGHT NOW BETWEEN MOUNTAIN ROAD AND ROUTE 22. SO IF YOU DO NEED TO HEAD OUT IN THIS DIRECTION IN DAUPHIN COUNTY, YOU DO WANT TO KEEP THAT IN MIND. 147 SEEING SOME SIGNIFICANT SLOWDOWNS IN THE AREA HERE, A ROAD IS BLOCKED IN GETTYSBURG BECAUSE OF THE FIRE THAT WE HAD ON TUESDAY BETWEEN WASHINGTON STREET AND BALTIMORE STREET. SO GIVING THOSE FIRE CREWS A LOT OF EXTRA SPACE AND OF COURSE, AS THEY CLEAN THE AREA UP. SO WE’LL HAVE ANOTHER CHECK ON TRAFFIC FOR YOU COMING UP IN ABOUT TEN MINUTES. THIS HAS BEEN A LANCASTER TOYOTA TRAFFIC REPORT RIGHT NOW. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES IN HARRISBURG, WHERE POLICE SHOT A MAN AFTER THEY SAY HE SHOT AT AN OFFICER. AND YOU SAY IT’S GABRIEL THOMAS LIVE OUTSIDE POLICE HEADQUARTERS WITH THE VERY LATEST GABRIELLE. MATT. REGINA. WELL, THE MAN WAS SHOT AFTER INVESTIGATORS SAY HE OPENED FIRE ON AN OFFICER WHO WAS JUST TRYING TO CONFRONT HIM. NOW, THIS ALL HAPPENED YESTERDAY, AROUND NOON, NEAR CAMERON AND MACLAY STREET. POLICE SAY THE MAN FIT THE DESCRIPTION OF SOMEONE WHO FIRED SHOTS EARLIER. THAT DAY. AND THAT’S WHEN THE EXCHANGE OF FIRED SHOTS TOOK PLACE, WITH OFFICERS SHOOTING THE MAN IN THE TORSO. THIS VIDEO WAS CAPTURED BY A DRIVER WHO WAS PASSING BY WHILE POLICE WERE TAKING THE MAN INTO CUSTODY. WE SPOKE WITH THE DA AND HE SAYS THANKFULLY NO ONE ELSE IN THE AREA WAS HURT. A SHOT FIRED BY THE SUSPECT, UH, COULD HAVE COULD HAVE HURT SOMEBODY. AND IT’S JUST JUST THANKFUL THAT NOBODY LEE UH, NO INNOCENT WAS INJURED. WE’RE HOPING TO LEARN MORE INFORMATION TODAY ABOUT THE MAN’S IDENTITY, CONDITION AND WHAT CHARGES HE IS FACING. EVENTUALLY, THE DA WILL ALSO HAVE TO DETERMINE IF POLICE WERE JUSTIFIED IN SHOOTING HIM. NOW, POLICE ARE STILL WORKING ON CHARGING THE MAN. SO AS WE LEARN MORE INFORMATION, WE’LL KEEP YOU UPDATED. LIVE IN HARRISBURG GABRIELLE THOMAS, WGAL, NEWS EIGHT. ALL RIGHT. THANKS, GABRIELLE. ALSO IN HARRISBURG, A TEACHER AND SECURITY MONITOR ARE ON LEAVE AFTER THEY GOT INTO A PHYSICAL FIGHT IN FRONT OF STUDENTS AT JOHN HARRIS HIGH SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT DOCTOR ERIC TURMAN SAYS A SECURITY MONITOR WALKED INTO A CLASSROOM AND CONFRONTED THE TEACHER ABOUT A PERSONAL MATTER. YESTERDAY MORNING. THE VERBAL FIGHT THEN ESCALATED INTO A FIST FIGHT, AND OTHER TEACHERS, SECURITY STAFF AND EVEN A STUDENT TRIED TO BREAK THE FIGHT UP THE SUPERINTENDENT HAS THIS MESSAGE NOW FOR THE STUDENTS. FIRST OFF IS, YOU KNOW WHAT I WOULD SAY TO ANY KID IS WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES. OKAY. UM, AND WE’VE ALL MADE MISTAKES IN LIFE. SO, YOU KNOW, WITH THE TWO INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED, I’M SURE PROBABLY, UPON REFLECTION, DOWN THE ROAD, THEY PROBABLY WOULD REFLECT AND SAY THEY DID NOT USE WISE JUDGMENT. BOTH EMPLOYEES WERE ESCORTED OUT OF THE SCHOOL. THEY ARE NOW ON PAID LEAVE WHILE THE DISTRICT INVESTIGATES. THE DISTRICT SAYS THAT COUNSELORS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO TALK WITH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TODAY, WHO WITNESSED THE FIGHT. THIS MORNING WE ARE EXPECTING TO LEARN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT A SHOOTING IN MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY POLICE SAY IT HAPPENED AROUND 420 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE INTERSECTION OF FRUITVILLE PIKE AND DELP ROAD. THEY DIDN’T RELEASE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION, ONLY SAYING THERE’S NO DANGER TO THE PUBLIC. AND IN FRANKLIN COUNTY, CHAMBERSBURG POLICE ARE ASKING FOR THE PUBLIC’S HELP. TO LEARN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SOME SHOTS FIRED AT AN INCIDENT. POLICE SAY TWO MEN WERE TALKING IN AN ALLEY NEAR GLENN STREET YESTERDAY MORNING, WHEN ONE OF THEM PULLED OUT A HANDGUN AND FIRED SEVERAL TIMES INTO THE AIR. NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS INCIDENT SHOULD CONTACT POLICE IN YORK COUNTY. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A STABBING THAT LEFT ONE PERSON HURT. DISPATCHERS SAY THE CALL CAME IN JUST BEFORE 8:00 LAST NIGHT ALONG THE 300 BLOCK OF HIGH STREET IN HANOVER. AT THIS TIME, THE VICTIM’S CONDITION IS NOT CLEAR, AND WE NOW KNOW THE IDENTITY OF THE WOMAN WHO WAS KILLED IN A FIRE IN JACKSON TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNTY. THE CORONER SAYS 71 YEAR OLD JOSEPH HARTMAN WAS FOUND DEAD INSIDE HER MOBILE HOME AT CHESAPEAKE ESTATES ON TUESDAY. ZARTMAN HAD BEEN SMOKING AND WAS USING AN OXYGEN TANK. FIREFIGHTERS LEARNED THE FIRE HAD STARTED HOURS BEFORE SHE WAS FOUND IN THE HOME. TWO PEOPLE KILLED IN A HOUSE EXPLOSION NEAR PITTSBURGH HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS AN 89 YEAR OLD MAN, AND HIS 87 YEAR OLD WIFE, DAVID AND HELEN MITCHELL, DIED WHEN THE EXPLOSION LEVELED THEIR HOME TUESDAY MORNING. TWO OTHER OTHER HOMES WERE DAMAGED IN THAT BLAST. THE CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE AND THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES. NEW THIS MORNING, MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE WERE HURT DURING AN FBI TRAINING EXERCISE IN CALIFORNIA. 16 MEMBERS OF THE SWAT TRAINING TEAM WERE INJURED WHEN AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED INSIDE OF THE BUILDING. THEY ALL WENT TO THE HOSPITAL, WITH MOST BEING RELEASED AFTER BEING CHECKED FOR DIZZINESS AND RINGING IN THE EARS. AT LEAST ONE PERSON, THOUGH, HAD TO UNDERGO SURGERY FOR A LEG INJURY. IT IS 606 AND TAKE A LOOK AT THIS SEVERE WEATHER THAT MOVED THROUGH NORTHWEST KANSAS LAST NIGHT. A LOT OF LIGHTNING, BUT IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SCREEN YOU CAN SEE THAT TORNADO SPUN UP THERE. THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE TORNADO ON THE GROUND NEAR ALTA VISTA. NOW THIS HAPPENED LAST NIGHT WHEN IT WAS DARK. STILL DARK THIS MORNING THERE. SO WE AREN’T AWARE OF DAMAGE QUITE YET. WE’LL WAIT AND SEE WHEN THE SUN RISES. WE ALSO DON’T KNOW DON’T KNOW IF THERE WERE ANY INJURIES IN THAT STORM IN YORK COUNTY TODAY. CONTROLLED BURN IS PLANNED TO IMPROVE THE FOREST NEAR THE SHEPHERD MYERS RESERVOIR IN HANOVER. SO IF YOU’RE IN THAT AREA TODAY, YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO SEE SMOKE DURING THE CONTROLLED BURN. HANOVER BOROUGH OFFICIALS ARE ASKING THAT YOU DON’T CALL TO REPORT THAT FIRE. THEY KNOW ABOUT IT. THEY SAY IF MORE PEOPLE CALL IN, THAT COULD REMOVE RESOURCES THAT ARE NEEDED ELSEWHERE IN YORK COUNTY AND DAUPHIN COUNTY. NOW, IMPROVEMENTS AT THE HARRISBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ARE UNDERWAY AND MORE ARE COMING. YEAH, A LOT OF WORK THERE. NEWS EIGHT’S JAKE REYES IS LIVE AT HIRE WITH HOW THE UPGRADES COULD ALLOW MORE PLANES TO LAND IN THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY. JAKE. MATT AND REGINA. GOOD MORNING. WELL, WHEN WE THINK ABOUT HIRE, WE THINK ABOUT PEOPLE COMING IN AND OUT OF THIS AIRPORT. BUT THERE’S ANOTHER IMPORTANT COMPONENT HERE AND THAT’S DELIVERING CARGO. AND THIS WEEK, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT CREWS ARE DOING. AS YOU CAN SEE BEHIND ME, THERE, EXPANDING THE CARGO TARMAC AND THAT’S GOING TO ALLOW MORE PLANES LIKE FROM FEDEX AND UPS TO COME AND DELIVER THOUSANDS OF MORE PACKAGES. NOW I HAVE SCOTT MILLER HERE WITH ME WITH HIRE SCOTT, RIGHT NOW YOU CAN FIT ABOUT TEN PLANES AT THIS AIRPORT, AT THIS CARGO TARMAC, THREE MORE COULD BE ADDED. WHAT’S THE IMPACT OF THAT? WHAT THE IMPACT IS, IT GIVES THE FREIGHT CARRIERS MORE SPACE TO DO THEIR JOBS MORE EFFICIENTLY AS DEMAND WARRANTS. SO IT’S SOMETHING WHICH AT PEAK TIMES IS VERY DIFFICULT. THE SPACE THEY ARE USING OUT HERE TO MOVE THE CARGO IN AND OUT IS VERY TIGHT, VERY CONSTRICTED. AND THEY DO A TREMENDOUS JOB WITH IT. WHEN THIS PROJECT IS COMPLETED BY THANKSGIVING NEXT YEAR, WE HAVE THREE MORE SPACES TO PUT LARGER AIRCRAFT AND MORE SPACE FOR THEM TO BE MORE EFFICIENT, WHICH SAVES THEM TIME. AND TELL ME, LIKE WHAT THIS LANDSCAPE LOOK LIKE. WHAT ARE THEY WORKING ON THIS WEEK AND WHAT COULD WE SEE BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR? WHAT WE’RE SEEING HERE IN THE FRONT, IN THE FOREGROUND HERE, LONG AIRPORT ROAD, THEY’RE BUILDING A CONCRETE BATCH PLANT BEHIND THE FEDEX TRAILERS OVER HERE. THEY CAN START BUILDING THE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. WE DUG UNDER THE RUNWAY LAST YEAR. THEY’RE NOW CONNECTING THAT TO THE WHERE THE RAMP IS GOING TO BE NEXT SUMMER. THEY PUT DOWN THE FIVE ACRES OF RAMP WHERE THE AIRPLANES WILL PARK. ALL RIGHT SCOTT, THANK YOU. AND ANOTHER UPGRADE IS ON THE WAY. AND THAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT YEAR. BOB CASEY AND JOHN FETTERMAN ANNOUNCED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FUNDING TOWARDS HARRISBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. AND THAT’S GOING TO REPLACE THE EXISTING JET BRIDGES. REPORTING LIVE IN HARRISBURG, JAKE REYES, WGAL NEWS EIGHT. ALL RIGHT. THANKS, JAKE. NEW THIS MORNING. MORE MONEY ON THE LINE IN THE POWERBALL JACKPOT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WINNER AGAIN LAST NIGHT. $600 MILLION. NOW WHERE IT STANDS, NO ONE HAS WON THE TOP PRIZE FOR THE POWERBALL SINCE NEW YEAR’S DAY. SO IT HAS BEEN A WHILE. THESE ARE THE WINNING NUMBERS LAST NIGHT IN CASE YOU HAD SOME COMBINATION. THEY’RE 21, 29, 54, 59, 62. THE POWERBALL WAS FOUR FOUR. YOU’LL HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE TO HIT THAT JACKPOT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. BUT REMEMBER, THERE’S ALSO A $792 MILLION JACKPOT UP FOR GRABS IN TOMORROW’S MEGA MILLIONS JACKPOT. BOTH DRAWINGS WILL BE RIGHT HERE ON WJHL DURING NEWS EIGHT AT 11. MAYBE WE SHOULD GO PICK UP A TICKET. WELL, YOU GET ONE, I’LL GET THE OTHER. OR FIVE AND 5 OR 5 OR JUST 500. AND I’M JUST KIDDING. INCREASE YOUR CHANCES. CHRISTINE. HIT THE JACKPOT, THOUGH. FOR TODAY. THE WEATHER. I’M TELLING YOU, WE’VE BEEN HITTING THE JACKPOT ALL WEEK HERE. I DON’T KNOW WHY WE KEEP TALKING ABOUT THESE LOTTERY STORIES. WE WON. LET ME SHOW YOU THE POLLEN FORECAST TODAY. MODERATE POLLEN LEVELS. SAME DEAL FOR TOMORROW. AND THAT REMAINS MODERATE THROUGH THE WEEKEND. SO THESE WARMER TEMPERATURES STARTING TO WAKE UP. THE POLLEN AROUND THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY. AND THIS IS PREDOMINANTLY TREE POLLEN. WE’LL TALK MO
