NORMAL — Rivian Automotive Inc. plans to cut one of three shifts at its plant in Normal, almost two weeks after the company announced plans to lay off 10% its total salaried workforce.
Rivian, which has more than 8,000 workers at its manufacturing facility in Normal, said in February that it plans to make 57,000 electric vehicles this year — the same number assembled in 2023.
Kelli Felker, corporate communications senior manager at Rivian, said in an email Wednesday that manufacturing will move to two shifts April 28, after the Normal plant's planned three-week shutdown that month. The company will have a day shift and a night shift, but eliminate the second shift (afternoon to evening), she said.

Felker said production lines will stop in April while the company transforms its R1 production to "integrate new engineering design changes that we expect will significantly reduce our cost."
"All hourly employees will be offered a job on one of the two available shifts as we will increase capacity per shift," Felker said in the email. "With our continued improvements in efficiency, we can meet that goal on two shifts."
In a quarterly earnings call last month, Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe also spoke of the three-week April shutdown at the Normal plant that will retool the assembly line for greater efficiencies.
In the fourth quarter of 2023, Rivian reported a loss of $1.5 billion compared to a loss of about $1.7 billion during the same period in 2022.
The Irvine, California-based company produced 57,232 vehicles last year and delivered 50,122 vehicles to customers, more than doubling its numbers from 2022, according to a news release.
Rivian is also set to reveal its midsize electric vehicle platform, named the R2, for the first time on Thursday. The vehicle will be produced at the company's plant in Georgia.
