San Antonio auto manufacturing booms, promising growth without immediate hiring shifts - WOAI

SAN ANTONIO - From January to March, both San Antonio-manufactured vehicles saw significant increases in sales.

Reaching record highs for both the month and the quarter. The Sequoia saw a 35.9% increase in vehicles sold compared to last year. The Tundra saw a similar increase in sales which is a 31% increase.

We spoke with the San Antonio Manufacturers Association (SAMA) today to see if sales numbers like these will lead to an increase in jobs.

"I think that the overall opportunities in manufacturing in our region are going to grow," said SAMA CEO, Dan Yoxall.

Yoxall says the manufacturing industry is experiencing a surge in San Antonio and across the state.

"Toyota's success, and that success of all the manufacturers in the region is attracting a very competitive workforce environments," said Yoxall.

Yoxall also said the model that Toyota has implemented in manufacturing plants like the one on the south side is expected to be replicated by other vehicle manufacturers.

"I think that has a ripple effect across our manufacturing industries, because it helps us produce a better prepared workforce, and more opportunities for people entering are currently in the job market here, shared Yoxall."

We reached out to Toyota to ask them whether increased sales will mean more jobs here. They sent us a statement that said, "Right now, there are currently no plans for hiring changes."

Whatever happens, San Antonio and Bexar County look primed to be a hot spot for business in the years to come.
