Major manufacturer closing Memphis-area plant, affecting 1,300 jobs - WREG NewsChannel 3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A major Arkansas automotive parts manufacturer is closing, affecting more than 1,000 workers, according to a company press release.

Hino Motors says it will close its Marion, Arkansas plant by mid-to late 2027 and withdraw from the parts manufacturing business.

The company says it made the decision at a May 31 board meeting, citing difficulty in profitability.

The Hino Motors plant in Marion employs 1,300 people and started operations in 2006, the company says. It manufactures auto parts for Central and South America.

“We appreciate the strong contributions of our Arkansas team as well as the support extended to us by the City of Marion and the state of Arkansas over the years,” said Hino Motors Manufacturing President Davey Jung in a press release. “This difficult choice will allow our company to redirect our focus towards our truck operations in the United States.”

The Memphis Business Journal says Hino is the second-largest manufacturer in the Memphis area.

The City of Marion thanked Hino for its contribution to the community.

“The city of Marion is committed to supporting the affected employees during this transition and working towards creating new opportunities for growth and development in our community,” a news release from the city said.

The Japan-based company has U.S. headquarters in Detroit and also has a plant in West Virginia.
