AI has not only helped these companies reduce costs but also increase efficiencies and reduce workplace incidents.
For instance, Apollo Tyres has achieved 8-10% efficiency gains by using data along with AI/ML in the tyre compound mixing process.

“Given the initial success, several other projects have been initiated to digitalise our production plants using extensive data and data science,” said its chief digital and supply chain officer, Hizmy Hassen.

The tyre maker is now working on improving its sales forecasting by using AI to check weather conditions, exchange rates, etc. “This will allow us to provide much better availability of stocks at a lower working capital,” he said.Apollo Tyres has connected most key production machines to the cloud using Internet of Things (IOT) technologies. It has created a data lake and is currently streaming more than 1500 data elements in near real time to the cloud to drive machine efficiency.

Godrej & Boyce is currently working on implementing AI-powered digital twins for customer, product, process and employee. The digital twins will help in making simulation to operate to gain efficiencies and reduce margin of error and costs.

“Godrej & Boyce is on a transformative journey, leveraging AI to optimise every aspect of our business,” said Vijay Balakrishnan, chief digital and information officer, Godrej & Boyce.

“We are also exploring the use of Employee Twins to enhance employee development and engagement,” said Balakrishnan.

Glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain has started using both predictive AI and Gen AI across some of its processes and functions. It is now looking to broaden the use of AI across all its processes.

“The company has already invested a lot of manpower, time and funds into AI and will continue to invest heavily as we are seeing the returns,” said B Santhanam, CEO, Asia Pacific, Saint-Gobain.

Going forward, for all new production lines, the glass maker intends to use machines that come with preinstalled edge devices. An edge device is an endpoint on the network which is an interface between the data centre and the real world.

Santhanam said Saint-Gobain has been able to reduce customer complaints by 5X in the last one year with the use of an AI-enabled camera that delivers high speed video analytics. “This has helped in identifying the unseen defects in our end products - glass and gypsum.”

The number of finger injuries and man machine collisions at Saint-Gobain have also reduced with the use of AI-enabled machines and devices.

Digitalisation and automation are a key focus area for Maruti Suzuki, said its spokesperson. It has set up a dedicated digital enterprise vertical to extensively map areas where digitalisation can be used. “These solutions are being deployed for internal systems and processes, as well as to add to customer delight.”

Maruti has deployed AI-powered virtual chatbots, AI-based avatar on its corporate website to assist with responses and customer interactions, voicebot AMIE to manage calls and KARA, a chatbot, to engage customers on platforms like WhatsApp. It has digitalised the owner’s manual for all vehicle models, the company told ET.
