Everyone likes the idea of camping, but in reality, the cold, dirt and dangers of sleeping outside can turn people off.

Dean Wiltshire, the founder and chairman of Boulder-based Colorado Teardrops, experienced this anxiety firsthand when camping in Yellowstone National Park with his daughter in 2014. Though they came away unscathed, another camper was mauled by a grizzly bear.

Tracking down a reasonably priced camper proved difficult, so when he got home to Boulder he quit his tech-sector job and started Colorado Teardrops.

Once the design was perfected, he and his son couldn't build them fast enough.

"I think the early success of our company is due, in part, to the new type of outdoor enthusiast that has emerged in the outdoor and travel industries: those looking to adventure and get off the grid without having to sacrifice convenience and comfort," Wiltshire said.

To keep up with the growing demand, Colorado Teardorps will open a new headquarters at 1750 55th St. in Boulder, complete with a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing space and a newly designed showroom. At 8,000 square feet, the new space is double the size of the company's previous Boulder-based facilities on Central Avenue.
