Last week, Samsung finally gave us a peek at its much-rumoured and hyped foldable phone. The company showed of the device's Infinity Flex Display at its developers conference where it also announced that the phone will be ready for mass market in the coming months. Samsung seems pretty optimistic about its first full foldable phone, which is why the company is reportedly planning to make at least 1 million units initially.
As per a report by Yonhap, Samsung's mobile chief DJ Koh said after the presentation last week that the company plans to manufacture at least 1 million units of the foldable phone in its initial phase. If the response is positive, the company will make more. As of now, there is no exact date of launch of the foldable phone, but Koh has said with certainty that it will go on sale in the first half of 2019.
Koh does not believe that the foldable phone will replace the existing form factor of smartphones so soon. This is why the company is also working on rollable and stretchable displays as well and we could see some these phones showcased over the next two years. Koh also said that Samsung is focussed on a proper release of the Galaxy S10 next year as it will be the 10th anniversary of of the flagship series.
A separate report by Yonhap also reveals that the phone will likely be called Galaxy F and that Samsung is targeting a March release after the launch of the Galaxy S10 in February according to sources familiar with the matter. The report adds that the Galaxy F will cost 2 million won (approx Rs 1,28,000), which suggests sales will be low.
The foldable phone that Samsung revealed last week comes with a proprietary screen that Samsung calls Infinity Flex Display. It showed a 7-inch AMOLED panel being folded down the middle to close the device. The phone also has a secondary 4.3-inch AMOLED display on the outside that can be used as a regular smartphone. Samsung says the display does not get a glass protection, but rather an advanced layer of composite polymer that is flexible and durable that will allow the user to fold the display "hundreds of thousands of times."
Samsung has designed a new interface design called One UI which is set to replace its Experience UI. Samsung has worked closely with Google and Android developers to create a UI that is minimalistic, showing only relevant content on the bottom of the screen for easy one-handed use. One UI will not be used for the foldable phone, but will also make it to the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Note 9 with Android 9 Pie early next year.
