OROVILLE — As they walked to the river’s edge holding baby salmon in cups, second graders warned the tiny fish of predators before gently setting them free into the water.
Two classes from Oakdale Heights Elementary School took part in a salmon study that came to a close Friday at Riverbend Park in Oroville.
Instructor Cindy King took small groups of the second-grade students down to the Feather River to pick out a fish to set free.
“We are studying the salmon life cycle as well as the life cycle of many animals and plants, so it fits right in,” King said. “It’s very tangible and it’s special for us because we do have the hatchery here.”
Each class was given 35 eggs earlier in the school year by the Feather River Fish Hatchery to monitor in a tank and allow students to get hands-on biology experience. Part of the funding for the tank is provided by the Kiwanis club. The tank requires a chiller that keeps the water at 49 degrees to simulate the temperature of a river.
King’s teaching partner Elisa Huru has been conducting this project annually for nine years. Once the fish are ready, the students get to give them a send-off. How many eggs make it can vary from year to year. This year, of the 70 eggs, 46 made it until the end.
“We’re excited to have enough for each kid to let one go,” said King, who was bringing her class for the first time on Friday.
Once each child got their fish, King knelt down to the group and reminded them to be gentle when placing the fish in the river and to warn the fish of the many predators.
King said before the project, the instructors involved go to a training course held by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife so they can better prepare their students.
Because of the hatchery in the city, King said studies such as this are unique to Oroville.
“When the salmon come home, it’s a cultural event in this town,” King said. “It just makes it really meaningful for the kids and the community to see that the kids are taking care of the fish.”
