I see a wide variety of local clients every day and there are some pretty significant questions that I get — some of those are relevant to the larger community. This column serves as a way to answer the most frequently asked mental health and wellness questions for the benefit of all Space Coast residents.
Q: Like so many others, my New Years resolution was to lose weight. I have failed miserably.
I have not been able to maintain even a week’s worth of healthy eating and consistent exercise.
The weather is already warming up and I am dreading having to go bathing suit shopping.
Every time I look in the mirror I get mad at myself, yet I still cannot motivate myself to make the healthy decisions I know need to be made for weight loss.
Do you have any suggestions for how to break this defeating cycle?
A: Good nutrition and consistent exercise are essential for weight loss.
You know this, but somehow you are stuck in an unhealthy cycle.
It’s easy to beat yourself up and think you are “weak” compared to those that seem to effectively maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The reality is, you probably have something off in your process that is continuing to set you up for failure.
If you knew what it was, you wouldn’t be doing it. But, there’s a lot of information circulating out there on this subject and it can be hard to decipher what’s accurate and what’s not.
It might be a good time to pull in some expertise to evaluate your approach.
Let’s start by ruling out the excuses.
People tend to resist inviting in help on their weight loss goals for reasons including time, money and feeling like they can or should do this on their own.
You make time and money for the things that are important to you. If you make your health a priority, you likely can find ways to cut out unnecessary obligations to make time and could probably scrape up the money by saving on eating out, alcohol and expensive lattes.
Can you do it on your own? Maybe… but you will probably save time and money by doing it right the first time.
Experts can help you sift through misconceptions you may have about the right approach to weight loss and even add some new information you didn’t have in the first place.
An additional benefit of inviting experts into your process is they will hold you accountable. They will pick you up when you are feeling down, cheer you on with your successes and push you forward when you plateau.
Acknowledging you need this to be successful is not weak, it is wise.

A registered dietician is a great resource to gain accurate information about managing a healthy metabolism.
A personal trainer can ensure that you are preforming exercises properly and effectively.
However, many people overlook the benefits of seeking the expertise of a mental health professional for weight loss, which is often a crucial resource for getting to the root of the issue and creating lasting results.
When you look in the mirror and criticize yourself it causes feelings of guilt and shame. It creates pressure to do better or be better and increases stress levels.
When under stress the body can experience drastic changes in Cortisol hormone levels which wreaks havoc on our appetite, metabolism, sleep, digestion and immune system.
Over time this sets you up for failure in maintaining good nutrition and exercise.
Other factors that contribute to the correlation between stress and weight loss include unresolved traumas (including large traumas or several small accumulated traumas), unhealthy relationships, low self-confidence, grief, anxiety, depression and work-life balance.
We cannot ignore the intimate connection between our mind and body when working to improve our health.
A therapist is able to help you sort through, process and heal from underlying issues preventing you from feeling your best inside and out.
If you want to learn more, join me March 5 when I team up with registered dietician Betsy Markle to present on the "Mood Food Connection."
We will be discussing how to eliminate cravings, improve energy and mood, stabilize blood sugar and improve self-confidence.
