A WOMAN whose husband was hit by a taxi near the Winterbournes has called for a new cycle path into the city.
Joy Harrison has launched a petition, which has almost 700 signatures so far, asking for a “safe cycle path to commute to and from the Winterbournes and Porton into Salisbury, to avoid cycling along the Portway and A338.”
Joy says there is limited public transport to and from the village, as the hourly bus service finishes at 6.30pm on weekdays and only runs on a Saturday morning at the weekend.
On the petition page, Joy says: “The government has a commitment to reduce CO2 omissions and create sustainable transport options for the UK.
“Cycling is a healthy option but is dangerous with fast traffic and sharp bends.
“As a family we enjoy cycling, and my children aged from five to 17 like to cycle to and from school and to their evening activities in Salisbury, however I am extremely fearful for their safety.
“My husband was hit by a taxi who did not stop on the Portway, and I have assisted a cyclist in Ford who fractured his hip and leg and was left lying in the middle of the road when he was hit by a taxi who also did not stop.”
Joy would like to see a cycle path between Salisbury and the Winterbournes to link with the cycle path which DSTL propose between Winterbournes and Porton.
Joy added: “This will be a great commitment towards sustainable transport and reducing CO2 omissions, and a fantastic opportunity to promote health and wellbeing for residents, tourists and commuters.”
