Cape Town – A man who took part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday died soon after completing the race.
Physiotherapist Najmee Marlie, 44, who was a member of the Walmers Athletics Club, had reportedly already left the event when he died. He was buried yesterday.
A total of 13 people were admitted to hospital after tackling the 109km route in the world’s largest timed cycling race.
"We admitted 13 people to hospital. About 38 were sent to hospital from route for a variety of complaints," Cycle Tour director David Bellairs said.
Last year, a participant passed away during the event after collapsing at Smitswinkel Bay due to a heart attack.
In 2018, three people who were part of the event died.
There were two deaths on the day of the event – one due to a pile-up involving a group of 20 cyclists on the M3 south-bound and the other as a result of a heart attack suffered during the race.
A cyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene of a pile-up with other competitors at the base of Wynberg Hill, while another cyclist is suspected to have experienced a heart attack going up the hill at Smitswinkel Bay.
A Rotary marshal died in hospital a day after the event after an incident on the descent from Suikerbossie and into Llandudno.
