Detroit Bikes to manufacture 500 classic Schwinns in U.S. - MLive.com

DETROIT – Schwinn bicycles will be produced on U.S. soil for the first time in nearly 40 years when Detroit Bikes assembles 500 that will be available as early as August, The Associated Press reports.

Detroit Bikes will revive Schwinn’s classic 1965 Collegiate bike in time for the legendary brand’s 125-year anniversary, the report said. The last U.S.-made Schwinn bikes rolled of production lines in 1982.

Both American companies have immigrant roots. Schwinn was founded by German immigrant Ignaz Schwinn in 1895 in Chicago. Detroit Bikes was founded by Canadian immigrant Zak Pashak in 2011.

This limited run is a “big step” toward bringing bicycle manufacturing back to the U.S., Pashak said.

“We’re going to need to step up our game for this one,” he said. “But we’re ready to take on the challenge.”

The Schwinn Collegiate to be produced in Detroit is intended to reflect "the leisurely aesthetic evoked by the 1965 version", said Ryan Birkicht, senior communications manager at Schwinn Bikes.

These nostalgia-inducing bikes will be painted in classic Campus Green, the report said. They will be available exclusively through Walmart – Schwinn’s No. 1 retailer - for $998.

Demand is expected to be high for the limited-run bikes as outdoor equipment sales boom amid restrictions related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the report said.
