Students throughout the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District got a hands-on look at local businesses this month as part of Discover Manufacturing Week, held virtually and in-person.
The virtual week took place Nov. 1 to 5, while in-person business visits occurred Nov. 8 to 12.
More than 1,000 students at the OASID’s Careerline Tech Center, and 2,000 students throughout the ISD, took part. The regional event is intended to introduce students to manufacturing organizations to meet the talent needs of West Michigan businesses.
Businesses and students engage with interactive tours and employee involvement to start or continue student exploration in manufacturing and address common misconceptions about the industry.
“Manufacturing Week provides students a real-world glimpse into the careers they have been exploring here at Tech,” stated Careerline Tech Center Director Dave Searles. “We are grateful for our business and community partners who open their doors for our students to enhance their learning.”
During the virtual week, 30-minute virtual events were held featuring manufacturers speaking to workers at their facilities. Students also had the chance to ask questions. These sessions were recorded for future use and posted on the Discover Manufacturing YouTube channel.
Each of the CTC programs were able to participate in the in-person portion of the event.
Business visits included pastry arts and baking students visiting Request Foods and mechatronics, career learning center, plumbing and business management programs taking a trip to Fogg Filler.
