NORTH SMITHFIELD – A family-owned business operating in North Smithfield for more than 40 years sold operations to a neighboring Industrial Drive company for $1.3 million this week.
R & R Machine Industries, Inc., a machine manufacturer owned – and expanded – by husband and wife team Roland and Betty Legare, was purchased by JP Acquisition, LLC, according to town property records.
JP Acquisition registered as a business in Rhode Island this March, with Jason Jarvis of 140 Industrial Drive listed as manager. Jarvis is the owner of New England Truck Solutions, which has operated on Industrial Drive in North Smithfield since the business relocated to town from Pawtucket in 2005.
R & R was founded in 1980 by the Legares, operating from the couple’s home basement before taking up shop at 147 Industrial Drive. The Legares’ daughters have also been involved in the family business over the years, with Renay Legare Curran serving as vice president/CFO and Diane Legare Ranslow as executive assistant, marking a second generation. Their granddaughter Melissa Russell has served as secretary.
In recent years, the machine manufacture company employed 17 people, serving a variety of industries including fire suppression, automation technology, metrology and wind energy.
Now, the two-acre property that has long held R& R operations has transferred to Jarvis. His neighboring business, New England Truck Solutions, sells new and used medium-duty trucks, and offers truck painting, graphics, a body shop and trailer repair, plus parts and service. It also serves as a dealer of Toyota-owned Hino Trucks.
One of the largest of its kind in the state, the business has expanded over the years in North Smithfield, also opening a location in Avon, Mass. in 2020.
