The manufacturing deal is worth nearly Rs 10,000 crore, according to which the consortium will provide the trains to the Indian Railways over six years. The total deal also includes a 35-year annual maintenance contract, worth Rs 14,000 crore. Each train will cost Rs 120 crore.
TOI had reported on March 3 that the consortium had emerged as the second-lowest bidder for manufacturing and maintaining Vande Bharat trains. The lowest bidder - a consortium of Railway Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Russian company CJSC Transmashholding - will manufacture 120 Vande Bharats, also over a period of six years.
The main train components of the Vande Bharat trains would be manufactured at the Uttarpara plant of TWL, which is being renamed Titagarh Rail Systems, said Umesh Chowdhary, the vice-chairman and MD of TWL. The propulsion system and electronics would be manufactured at the BHEL plant in Bengaluru, he added.
TWL to deliver 1st train in 24 months
Umesh Chowdhary, the vice-chairman and MD of Titagarh Wagons (TWL), told TOI that the Uttarpara plant had the technological capability to build the 80 Vande Bharat trains. "But considering the magnitude of the Vande Bharat order, we shall require some capacity expansion," he added.
The assembling and maintenance would be done at the Integral Coach Factory facility in Chennai. "We have to deliver the first train in the next 24 months as per the conditions," Chowdhary said, adding that Rs 1,000 crore had been earmarked for capacity expansion, of which Rs 350 crore had already been invested.
