CII highlights Tiruchi's strength to manufacture defence products

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and other industry organisations on Friday listed out its strengths in engineering and heavy fabrication, presence of prominent educational institutions, and good land, rail and air connectivity as ideal factors in Tiruchi for manufacture of components for defence products.

During an interaction with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the chairman of CII Tiruchi Zone A.S. Ananthakrishnan said establishment of a common procurement centre, a Centre of Excellence for Defence Technologies, and a university of aerospace engineering or defence technologies figure among the expectations of Tiruchi Defence cluster.

The Defence Minister said bringing about a multiplier effect was the purpose behind revitalising existing MSME eco system through the Defence Industrial Corridor project. She assured to equip the industries in Tiruchi with the technical expertise to orient their capabilities towards defence sector.

Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman said the details of the simplified defence procurement policy would be made known shortly.

She urged industries in the region to submit particulars of their capabilities to the National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) so that the institution will be able to determine the kind of common facility required for the defence cluster in Tiruchi. The Defence Minister said this in response to the suggestion made by the NIT-T Director inviting industries to optimally utilise institution's incubation facility and the centre of excellence.

Earlier, the Defence Minister agreed to consider the request made by Tourism Minister Vellamandi N. Natarajan and Backward Classes Welfare Minister S. Valarmathi for transfer of a piece of Defence land at Mannarapuram for completion of the multi-level road overbridge near the Railway Junction. Collector K. Rajamani explained to Ms. Sitharaman that the project could be completed only if the Defence Ministry released 66 cents of its land.
