'Scientists are working hard to manufacture blood in a lab'

The world is in constant need of blood.

With all the scientists in the world, a caller to the Naked Scientist on the Eusebius McKaiser show asked Dr Chris why can't blood be manufactured in a lab?

There is an international shortage of clean safe blood.

The human population has blood groups from O, A, B and AB blood and you have to be very careful which blood you give to which group because not everyone can have everyone's blood.

If you put the wrong blood in, a person can have an agglutination reaction and this is where the blood clumps together in the vessels and blocks them.

It would be much better if we can make our own blood. Scientists are working very hard to try and do this. Scientists are getting better at manipulating stem cells to guide them to do this. The problem in that bone marrow is complicated.
