Amid pandemic news cycle, it’s time to say ‘enough’ - Boston Herald

I’ve had it. We’ve had it.

The coronavirus is bad, no argument, but how the TV pundits and political opportunists are using it is worse.

Enough of:

  • TV networks giving us daily updates on the numbers of coronavirus patients. The raw figures mean nothing, unless they are compared to so-called normal flu season statistics. Besides, there is no way they can be accurate. I”ll bet you dollars to donuts (Dunkin’ for me) that the number of cases are being undercounted by at least 50%, perhaps as many as 200-300%.
  • TV commentators repeating many times over the course of a day the same information on Trump antics, Democratic stupidity and, especially, the latest rumor about where the virus originated as if, at this point, it matters, if a rumor ever matters, which it doesn’t.
  • Delegations of public officials holding group press conferences where they spend most of their time (a) repeating what the person before them just said, even if it was a lie (b) introducing and praising one another or thanking other officials who weren’t important enough to invite to the microphone and (c) praising Trump so he’ll be nice to them and give them more face masks, praise for the president apparently being the impetus for the availability of life-saving equipment.
  • President Trump praising himself in the guise of informing the public. He once even played a campaign video during one of those supposed reports.
  • Trump blaming everyone else for this disaster while taking personal credit for the little bit of progress taking place, or simply making up false successes, thereby creating political hay out of a deadly pandemic. And the Lysol lies were the final straw.
  • Talk of another impeachment.
  • Protests against life-saving lockdowns and social distancing. Government’s first obligation is to keep us safe. The selfishness of these ignorant and/or uncaring people is nauseating.
  • Profiteering through agency and governmental bidding on  necessary medical devices.
  • Consumer price increases blamed on a virus.
  • Aid spending not in the millions, nor billions, but trillions of dollars, that seems to come out of nowhere, and is going to give us the largest per capita debt one could imagine. Why aren’t America’s geniuses getting together to find ways to generate money for our workers with imaginative and experimental business practices that could lead us into the coming generations?
  • Having even expert opinions showing us to be nowhere near defeating this virus. We are simply holding it at bay, and barely so at that.
