HOLMDEL, NJ: Two Holmdel teens are making an impact in helping with the shortage of desperately needed Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). They formed NJ Strong with PPE Group, where they have designed and now manufacture their own PPE face shields, to protect local front line workers. Yes, you read that right! They developed a prototype, and tested the product and then began manufacturing it with 3D printer technology. They delivered their first batch of 50 homemade, high quality, sanitized face-shields to local hospitals and to the Holmdel Police Department, on April 20th.
Founders of NJ Strong with PPE Group; Audrey Su and her younger brother William Sue are both students in Holmdel. Audrey is a junior at Holmdel High School, taking various STEM course and has completed an AP computer science course in Java. She likes the arts and is part of the Art Honor Society. She is also a teacher's assistant at the Jersey Shore Chinese School, and volunteers at her local church. William Su, is an 8th grader at William R. Satz Middle School and a Life Rank Boy Scout. William plays the Cello in his spare time and Orchestra. He is also a volunteer at Jersey Shore Chinese school, and at his church. He has experience in robotics and has won several competitions in STEM and Robotics.
William comments, "My sister and I decided to use 3D printing technology learned from our STEM and Robotic Program to make PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and we wanted to donate the PPE to local hospitals in NJ during the COVID-19 crisis. Our goal is to create 1,000-2,000 face-shields or more if needed, based on funding, and donations. We want to but the materials needed to make these face shields for our frontline heroes that are risking their lives for us every day.".
The sister, brother super team is looking for volunteers to reach their goal and invite more high school and middle school students to help this cause. Audrey comments, "Together, we can help NJ and make it stronger and safer for all of us. We are able to test different prototypes, and come up with the complete finished face shield, with a cost of $1.50 to $2.00 / shield."
They are currently able to produce as many as 32 face shields a day, using a printer with 3D technology. To reach their goal of 2000 face shields, Audrey and William have set up a Go-Fund Me page to raise $5,000. You can donate to this important cause HERE.
They are always looking for people to help them to make an impact on society and protect lives. If you would like to help: Volunteer Now They also are interested in showing fellow students and children how to make them as well if they would like to learn. Audrey comments, "With the $5,000 funding, we will be able to buy materials needed to make 2,000 face shields for the frontline heroes that are risking their lives to save lives." Find out more about their progress at: NJ Strong with PPE where you can see video demos of how they make and sanitize their face shields.
